( sadaatweb.com - 01.01.20 ) Two Indian soldiers were killed on Wednesday in an exchange of fire with armed elements at the border between India and Pakistan within the disputed Kashmir region, authorities said. The two soldiers were killed during an operation aimed at arresting Pakistanis trying to infiltrate India across the border, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. An army spokesman, Defender Anand, said in a statement that the operation was continuing.
India and Pakistan have been in conflict since 1947 divided Kashmir between the two parties, a conflict that has led to the emergence of a separatist tendency within the region controlled by India.

New Delhi accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels and of helping them cross the border in order to carry out attacks targeting Indian forces, while Islamabad denies this, and says it supports the right of the Kashmiris to self-determination by diplomatic means.

The Indian-controlled region of Kashmir has been tense since the abolition of the Indian national government last August, the semi-autonomy it enjoyed, and imposed severe restrictions on the population, including communications. Some of those restrictions were lifted, while SMS services resumed Tuesday.
Five local politicians were released on Thursday, while others are still in custody.
